Heather Cassano

Heather Cassano

Heather is an independent documentary filmmaker and the founder of Spin One Films. Her films are reminiscent of the direct cinema movement, adopting a patient, invested approach with her characters. Heather blends this observational style with deeply personal narratives, striving to tell authentic stories through her personal experiences.

In 2018, Heather premiered her first feature-length documentary The Limits of My World to a packed cinema at the Independent Film Festival Boston. The film went on to screen at numerous festivals across the United States and internationally, winning three Best Documentary awards and a Jury Prize.

Heather is now hard at work on her second feature-length documentary The Fate of Human Beings. She recently released a short film titled The Wild Girl of Brushvalley Township and a multi-channel video installation titled Madness about the same subject. The Wild Girl of Brushvalley Township aired on Connecticut Public Television in 2025 and was recently nominated for a Boston/New England Regional Emmy Award. The film is now streaming on PBS.

Heather’s work has been supported by the Points North Institute, UnionDocs, MASS MoCA, Massachusetts Humanities, and the LEF Foundation, among others. When she is not directing, Heather works as a colorist and editor on independent films. Her post-production credits include Oyate (Big Sky, 2017), Jonah Stands Up (New Orleans, 2016), Dear Georgina (Big Sky, 2020), and ᎤᏕᏲᏅ (Sundance, 2022). She is also an Assistant Professor of film/video at the University of Connecticut, teaching classes in documentary, cinematography, and post-production.
